‘Tis the season to indulge (even briefly) in tourist attractions like the Rockefeller Center ice skating rink and Christmas tree and the Magnificent Mile Lights in Chicago. Done up with thousands of lights, towering Christmas trees, fireworks displays, and sparkling winter wonderlands, cities across the country go all out for the holidays. Here are our top five picks for family-friendly holiday fun this year.

New York City

Of course, New York City is the classic holiday city destination, with that iconic giant Christmas tree, festive shop windows down Fifth Avenue, ice skating rinks, and charming Christmas markets. Step in from the cold to see Grand Central Station’s (free) Holiday Kaleidoscope Light Show displayed on their walls, sip hot cocoa at Central Park’s Wollman Rink, and snack on roasted chestnuts from street vendors all over town.

Newport Beach, Calif.

The country’s longest running holiday boat parade features more than 150 boats done up with colored Christmas lights, trees, and snowmen sailing along Newport Harbor near Balboa Island. Nearly 1 million visitors look onto the lights reflecting in the water as they stroll down Balboa Island, listening to carol singers and sipping hot cocoa. Just across the island, find your new favorite fish tacos at Great Mex restaurant. (Photo courtesy of Getty Images/David McNew)

Chicago

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, Chicago hosts the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, where more than 1 million lights adorn trees along the street to kick off the season. Then, the 45-foot tall Macy’s Great Tree goes up, as well as the brightly lit Christmas tree and holiday market in Daley Plaza, while State Street boasts sweet holiday-themed shop windows. Go skating on the Millenium Park rink before finding deep dish pizza at Giordano’s or warming up with a classic pot pie at the historic Berghoff nearby.

Natchitoches, La.

Perhaps the most famous stop along the Holiday Trail of Lights, which spans from Louisiana into Texas, Natchitoches is marking its 85th year of holiday festivities, which include many thousands of tiny lights along the downtown area and the Cane River Lake, carriage tours through the National Landmark District, carol singers, fireworks, and their Christmas by Candlelight tour of homes. Find a seat at the historic Landing Restaurant and Bar for traditional Louisiana cuisine.

Albuquerque, N.M.

At Albuquerque’s Botanic Garden every year, hundreds of thousands of lights are lit to celebrate the season with their River of Lights and Luminaria Tour. In historic Old Town, brown paper bags are lit up with candles, transforming the area into a warmly lit holiday wonderland. Find authentic New Mexican cuisine, like sopaipillas, in Old Town at Monica’s El Portal Restaurant. (Photo courtesy of Flickr/sburke2478)

The best cities in the world 2020

C ities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, reckoned Italo Calvino but the best have pretty decent architecture, a buzzing food scene and smart places to stay too. For our most recent annual Reader's Choice Awards survey, with results announced in October 2020, a boho North American city topped the list, with old favourites (including Sydney, Singapore and Charleston) and new arrivals (such as Lyon and Chiang Mai) making the cut, too.

Here are the winning cities as voted for by the readers of Condé Nast Traveller in The Readers' Choice Awards 2020:

This city in California's Orange County is known for its riverfront parks and secluded beaches.

The Renaissance city is one of the finest city breaks in Europe – we list the best rooftop bars in Florence and our favourite things to do in Florence.

This Portuguese city sits on the River Douro – find out more with our expert guide to Porto.

The capital city of British Columbia is set on the southern tip of Vancouver Island and has smart, English-style buildings that display the city's one-time connection to the UK.

Tuscan Siena is a hilltop town built in red brick, with pretty façades and a grand, Gothic duomo. We named it one of the most beautiful places to visit in Tuscany.

This is a city of bright lights and intimate backstreets – we asked local Charles Spreckley to share his insider guide to Tokyo.

Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the Alps.

The tiny capital of Malta is a sepia maze of narrow cobbled streets.

The revived Austrian city is famous for its Baroque architecture and centuries-old music scene – but there's been a recent influx of more modern things to do in Vienna, from urban wineries to hip coffee shops.

Arty Carmel-by-the-Sea is a genteel oceanfront town on California's dramatic Big Sur coastline.

For the fourth year running, Sydney made our list of the world's best cities. Watch our Bondi Beach video guide with local designer Nicky Zimmerman, and explore lesser-known neighbourhoods such as Chippendale and Pott's Point.

The recently revamped heritage hotel Raffles and the city's forward-thinking biophilic architecture have helped put Singapore on the list for the second time.

Read more about last year's winner Charleston, South Carolina, or read our review of The Dewberry, a smart mid-century modern pad that's worth checking out.

These are the best things to do in Lyon, the only French city to make the 2020 round-up.

Here's what to do in Kyoto, Japan's most creative city.

Merida is the most beautiful colonial city in Mexico's Yucatan province.
